Nikon Announces D700 SLR

July 1, 2008 - Nikon today introduced the D700, offering several key features taken directly from its pro-level D3 camera, but at a fraction of the price. In fact, during our pre-announcement product briefing, the phrase used time and time again to describe the new D700 SLR was "just like the D3." A brief rundown of the features where the two cameras are identical:

- same 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor (roughly the size of 35mm film frame)
- same EXPEED processing chip
- same ISO range (up to 6400 plus expanded range to 25600 equivalent)
- same 51-point auto focus system with 3D tracking
- same 920,000-dot LCD screen
- same scene recognition system

Of course, there are differences between the two cameras, as we'll outline in a moment, but these core qualities that make the D3 so desirable have been incorporated in a D700 that's smaller, lighter and significantly more affordable, at $2999.95 for the body alone or $3599.99 bundled with a 24-120 VR lens, compared to $4999.95 for the D3 body alone.

One significant difference between the two cameras is frame rate. The D3 can run 9 frames per second, while the D700 manages 5fps, though you can boost the D700 up to 8fps by adding an optional MB-D10 external battery pack. The D3 has two card slots, where the D700 has one. The shutter on the D3 is rated at 300,000 shots, while the D700 is rated at 150,000.

However, there are several intriguing areas where the new, less expensive model outperforms the D3. The D700 includes Nikon's sensor-shake dust reduction system, which was unavailable when the D3 was introduced. Both cameras offer Live View mode, but the D700 enables Live View with the virtual horizon feature enabled, which is not possible with the D3. The D700 also has built-in flash, which the all-pro D3 forsakes.

Nikon claims the D700 will start up in just 0.12 second and deliver a shutter-lag response of 0.40 milliseconds. The popular Picture Control System, which allows photographers to tweak a wide array of image capture features on one camera, then store them on a CompactFlash card and automatically input the settings to additional cameras, is supported in the D700.

There are two Live View modes, one designed for handheld shooting, the other for tripod-mounted photography. For playback on an HDTV screen, the D700 includes a mini HDMI cable (versus the full-size HDMI of the D3).

The D700 will be slightly taller and longer than the D300, to accommodate the larger sensor, but otherwise will maintain the earlier camera's relatively compact form factor. The solid magnesium alloy body is weatherproofed with O-ring seals to withstand wet and dusty environments.

Merced County Gets High Tech Underwater Robot

Merced, CA (KFSN) -- Merced County has a new underwater tool designed to do everything from search and rescue missions to homeland security inspections.

The sheriff's department recently used federal grant money to buy an underwater robot. This week deputies took it to Lake Yosemite for a unique training opportunity, and they invited us to go along.

This small, green swimming machine is giving the Merced County Sheriff's Dive Team a whole new view below the water.

Cmdr. Doug Jensen, Merced Co. Sheriff's Dept.: "The ROV can go down 600 feet deep, and it has video on it, so you can see underwater. It has a lighting system. It has a claw on it to pick items up. It also has a sonar system built into it that has a radius of 1200 feet."

Deputy Michael Harris: "We're setting it down on the bottom and scanning the area."

On this training outing, deputies are using the remotely operated robot to help raise a boat from the bottom of Lake Yosemite using inflatable bags.

"Both bags are full of air."

The boat sank last summer and the owner swam to shore. The dive team recently found the vessel using the sonar technology and confirmed their find with the video images.

"We've been able to see a lot of things."

Deputies say the robot can also be used to help divers look for evidence, rescue swimmers, and recover bodies. But Sheriff Mark Pazin says the Department of Homeland Security paid for the 60 thousand dollar robot primarily to help protect the Valley's water supply.

Mark Pazin, Merced Co. Sheriff: "This piece of equipment is to maintain the integrity of the waterways in Merced County and other contiguous counties."

That includes looking for cracks or other problems in dams and canals and even searching for explosive devices. Pazin says the robot is a valuable addition to the department's crime-fighting fleet.

Mark Pazin: "Now we can attack it from land, air, and sea."

The robot has already been used to help Tuolumne County Deputies search for a body in Lake Don Pedro. And Sheriff Pazin says it will be available to other neighboring counties if necessary.

Those of you who have read my reviews over the years know that I was originally very resistant to the Vegas software model but ultimately was seduced by it and now am firmly entrenched in the Vegas camp. So it will come as no surprise that the newest incarnation of Vegas (7.0) will garner high marks. But this isn’t just about a good piece of software getting better, it’s about the infrastructure of the program itself. The people that you get to deal with and how you as a user are ultimately treated.

When Sony Acquired Vegas, there was that awful moment when the “true believers” were certain that the death knell of Vegas was at hand. Sony would Drop the Software, Gut it and make it wind up on the bargain shelf at Geeks-R-Us, alter the code that it was unusable, or hunt down all users and send them to reeducation camps. Well, happily, none of that came to pass. What DID come to pass was that Sony threw some very smart and talented people into a room somewhere and had them IMPROVE on the product. The resultant issues of Vegas bear that out. They were really first on the scene with real HD capability. Their user interface, while distinctly different from the other major players out there, was friendly enough that newcomers could get a handle on things while experienced editors could come up to speed in short order as well (after discarding some pre-conceived notions of how editing works.).

The reefs off Pompano Beach are home to a variety of marine life. This video of Sea Ranch reef was taken during just one dive, on 4-Aug-07 from Avid Diver Charters. We saw stingrays, featherdusters, yellowheaded jawfish, balloonfish, lobsters, Christmastree worms, scorpionfish, an angelfish juvenile, and schools of grunt and porkfish.

Ancient Mariner Wreck

This four minute movie stars two O2ptima rebreather divers as they explore the Ancient Mariner wreck. It was recorded over two days of diving, on 31-Jul-07 with South Florida Dive Headquarters, and on 2-Aug-07 with ScubaTyme Charters. The wreck lies in 70 fsw and boasts an easily accessible swim-through.

As I've remarked before, I get to see and use a lot of digital cameras in the course of my job, from the cheapest budget compacts to the very best professional DSLRs. As a life-long camera nerd I couldn't be happier with this arrangement, but there is a drawback. The cameras that I review are loaned to me by the manufacturers; I keep them for a few weeks, and then I have to give them back. The problem with this is that sometimes I find a camera that's so good I really want to keep it. That Editor's Choice award isn't given lightly; I only award it to cameras that I would very much like to own. The Nikon D300 is just such a camera. It's going to be a sad day when I have to give this one back, because at a shade under £2,000 with the 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom lens there's no way I'm going to be able to afford to buy one for myself.

The D300 is the third-generation product of Nikon's successful semi-pro series which started off with the D100 back in early 2002. The D100 was a very long-lived model, and wasn't superseded until the launch of the D200 in late 2005. The 10.2-megapixel D200 is still available, costing around £800 body-only, or around £1,650 with the same 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom lens seen in this review. The D300 joins it in Nikon's range, providing a short step before the giddy heights of the 12.8-megapixel full-frame D3 professional camera, costing around £3,400 body-only. The D300 was launched at the same time as the D3 in August last year, and shares many of that camera's features, however it has a 12.3-megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor, which as far as I know is the same Sony sensor as found in the Sony Alpha A700. The D300 is currently priced at around £1,100 body-only, around £1,275 with the 18-70mm AF-S D kit lens, or £1,950 with the gorgeous 17-55mm f/2.8 zoom lens seen here.

The most obvious comparison is with Canon's semi-pro offering, the 10.1-megapixel EOS 40D. The D300 beats it by a couple of megapixels, but then the Canon is significantly less expensive, costing around £700 body-only or £950 with an EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM kit lens. Perhaps a more realistic comparison is with the aforementioned Sony Alpha A700. The two cameras have very similar specifications, but the A700 is currently selling at around £930 body-only, or £1,450 with the excellent Carl Zeiss T* 16-80mm F/3.5-4.5 lens. Another competitor in the same market is the forthcoming 14-megapixel Pentax K20D. Pentax has yet to be announce a price for the K20D, but the almost-identical Samsung GX20 is launching in March priced at just £699 with a kit lens.

The 170 foot Dewitt Clinton is a former dredge barge, sunk by the Broward County Artificial Reefs Program (BCARP) on 12-May-1995 in 175 fsw. On 26-Apr-2008, the underwater gods smiled, resulting in favorable conditions for two CCR and two OC divers on Miss Conduct Charters. RBJ and Corey N Chris Wreck

The Ronald B Johnson and Corey N Chris is South Florida's most unusual technical wreck. The 130 foot dredge Corey N Chris was sunk in 265 fsw in 1986, and when the 226 foot freighter RBJ was sunk in 1988, she accidentally landed on top at a 90 degree angle. Years ago Captain Jim Mims made this drawing, and the wreck has settled over time. Sony´s latest XDCAM camcorder is the first in a new category of Sony high definition camcorders known as XDCAM HD422. The 422 refers to 4:2:2 colour sampling. The previous XDCAM HD camcorders offered 4:2:0 colour sampling. What´s the difference? With 4:2:2 sampling, the recorded colour is the average colour taken from every pair of pixels in a 2x1 pattern. With 4:2:0 sampling, the recorded colour is the average colour taken from every block of four pixels in a 2x2 grid. The result is a better image.

The 700 also offers other significant improvements. It has a bit rate of 50 megabits per second compared to 35 mbps with previous XDCAM HD camcorders. This means more data is recorded and again the result is a better image.

Another key difference - the 700 records 1920 lines by 1080 lines. Earlier XDCAM HD models record 1440 lines by 1080 lines.

And the analogue to digital, or AD, converter is 14-bit rather 12-bit. This means more information is passed on for conversion from the analogue signal generated by the CCD block in the camera head to the digital signal processed as the image is recorded.

This latest Sony HD camcorder will be available at competitive rates and offers high quality, high definition images at similar rates to those charged for Digital Betacam in its early days.

CAMERA KITS

As a camera hire facilities we offer a full range of high definition and standard definition cameras, lenses and monitors and all the support kit you might need on location. Our preparation procedures are rigorous. We constantly update our processes to make sure the kits we deliver to you are perfect - the best they can be. This year, 2008, we are working towards ISO 9001 Quality Control accreditation. We hope to complete the process by December 2008 or early 2009. Work began in December 2007 and getting this recognition is a lengthy process.

Our most recent recent arrival is the Sony PDW-700 XDCAM HD422 camcorder. This is a significant upgrade of the previous XDCAM HD models and offers much stronger technical specifications. These camcorders record onto discs rather than videotapes. The 422 refers to the colour sampling ratio in the 700. Without getting too technical, the camera records more colour information than straight XDCAM HD models and it offers a higher bit rate - 50 megabits per second rather than 35 - which means more data and therefore information is recorded. This provides better images.

Our crews are thoroughly vetted. We’ve been working with most of them for several years - all are top rate lighting cameramen and sound recordists who are in demand. Those who have joined us more recently have only come by strong referral and because we have seen their work. What do we look for? Roxio's suite brings together a bucketful of media tools, some with overlapping capabilities. The main menu features so many different components it can leave you wondering which one to use. On the other hand, the suite offers many options. There's a Sound Editor that can convert audio from analog sources, such as records, into MP3s. You can copy CDs, back up media files, and more.

The main component for editing video is called VideoWave, and it works well. Links to common tasks line up on the left side of the screen. Clips play on the right side, and the timeline spools across the bottom. Like Pinnacle, the interface is not immediately overwhelming. It's not hard to grasp, from the get-go, how to take your video clips and string them together into a multimedia spectacular.

Roxio also includes MyDVD Express, a simplified video component that creates DVDs filled with clips you specify. If you don't want to spend time editing movies and just need to transfer them to DVD to show family, MyDVD is ideal.

Unfortunately, we experienced some serious stability problems. The program ran slowly and even froze a couple of times when we attempted to use MyDVD. We installed the suite on a different computer, and the MyDVD program crashed as soon as it opened. Two installs with problems indicates an issue. With problems like these, you may need to try out the free support; Roxio includes a virtual agent and Web ticket email support, as well as live phone support during business hours.(www.smartcomputing.com)

With more than 20 applications tucked into one software package, you get a lot of bang for your buck with Nero 7 Ultra Edition Enhanced. Nero excels at burning, with comprehensive options covering the media gamut. You can also use it to convert audio files; capture video; edit photos; create slideshows, mix CDs, and disc covers; watch and record TV; and call your mother (yes, really). That's the good news.

The bad news is that you may get lost trying to find an app. In the Start menu, there's a scary array of options and applets with no direction as to where to begin. You very nearly need to stumble upon Nero StartSmart just to navigate the software, and even then, the interface isn't very intuitive. Once you’ve fumbled your way to video creation, Nero's tools deliver the goods, but without good documentation, the process itself can be maddening. A hardcopy manual would do wonders for Nero's usability.

The tech support hotline is only available during weekday business hours and costs $1.29 per minute. (There’s no charge for time spent on hold.) Email support is free, but suffers some complaints for the long lag time before receiving a response. Another word of caution: Pay close attention during install because the default is to use a Nero app as the player for every type of media file. If you don't want to wait for Nero to load just to look at a JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), choose carefully.
While savvier users may make good use of Nero's first-rate features on their own, Nero's challenging navigation is too much trouble for newbies and the casual user without the aid of a third-party guide.(www.smartcomputing.com)

Adobe Premiere Elements is a fairly user-friendly package; it opens up with a video preview screen front and center, a scene timeline across the bottom, and a toolbox on the side. It's easy to figure out where to find what you need, and both video clips and effects can be dragged from the toolbox to the timeline. We were on our way to making our first movie in Premiere elements in no time. Once you've edited your movie, a big button on the toolbar leads to the DVD authoring section of the program.
Like most such programs, Premiere Elements includes two types of timeline functions. The traditional timeline is a detailed view of all the tracks, adjustments, and elements associated with your movie. The other, simplified view, which Premiere Elements calls the "sceneline," presents a slimmed-down look at the most important tracks with each clip represented by a still shot. Unless you're doing advanced editing, this is the way to construct a movie without a lot of fuss.

The program also provides full control over each aspect of your movie. Individual elements can be selected and technical specifications edited on the right side of the screen. Beginners will not need to pay much attention to these details, but more experienced users will appreciate the ability to control the video from start to finish. If you need help figuring something out, it's best to turn to the users guide because tech support will run you a painful $39 per incident. (Support plans are available.)

Premiere Elements installed quickly and does not take up as much hard drive space as some of the more unwieldy suites.
